Inside: Shopping Tip for the best time to buy Halloween candy and decorations at Target during 2017. UPDATE 11-5-17: Target Halloween Candy 70% off; Halloween Decorations 90% off If you are like me, clearance sales after Halloween are when you indulge your sweet tooth while still staying thrifty. Lots of opportunities will present themselves for a week or 10 days to pick up not only discounted candy but discounted seasonal decorations for next year. However, the base prices that everything starts at can be so elevated that it takes a steep percentage discount for something to become a real deal, particularly given the sales and coupons available leading up to Halloween. To look into this more, we decided to track Halloween candy prices at Target starting on September 10 of this year and running through whenever they clear all Halloween goods from the shelves. As they have in recent years, Target has started on November 1 with candy and most food items at 30% off and decorations and other items at 50% off. In all likelihood, future discounts of 50% and 70% off for candy and 70% and 90% off for decorations will be coming up before November 10 (with a slight chance of a 90% candy discount level as well). The header on this post (and the graph below) will be updated each day to note the current clearance discounts and when they drop. (Note that these will be taken from a single Target store in the Atlanta area; your local stores may drop their prices on different days.) In the meantime, how good is a 30% discount? Let’s check the numbers below. Presented here are the prices for eight representative Halloween candies or assortments sold at Target as they have changed since September 10.
The actual prices are shown as a percent of the listed non-sale price Target gives for each. The discount that you see reflects whatever in-store sales Target had each week leading up to Halloween plus a few coupon discounts that were readily available in mailers and newspapers, all with expiration dates on October 31. For most of these, the initial 30% clearance discount is the lowest price these candies have seen all season. A notable exception is for a 20.77oz bag of fun size Snickers which actually reached 60.7% of its list price two weeks ago with all of the available discount and coupons! A big, 38.6 oz bag of Mars candies also got close to this at 72.6% of its list price earlier in the season. So 30% is a respectable discount but not one that is outrageous. The upcoming 50% discount level will definitely be a low for all of these. But of course, your favorites may not still be available by the time we get there. If you simply have to have those full-size Reese’s pumpkins, watch the stock at your local store and go ahead and buy if it looks low. You can probably wait for the candy corn to hit 70% off!
